Back to LA

By: Kat Holm

/ My name is Kat Holm and I’m a junior, majoring in video/television and film. I’m from a very small town in Massachusetts and the high school I attended was small and limited. Since starting at Hofstra, I’ve tried to use every opportunity to further my knowledge of the industry and I never pass up the chance to grow my career. I’m the type of person that likes to try everything out, which is why I’m excited that we’ll be exploring multiple areas of the industry rather than just sticking to one. Throughout my college career, I’ve been able to get a taste of the many different departments in the media industry. I work at Hofstra Media Productions where I was taught how to create promotional corporate content as well as broadcast live sports productions. In my first internship at SportsRecruits in Brooklyn, I worked on event management, an area I had never even thought about pursuing. I have also worked on several indie short films to fulfill my passion for filmmaking. Finally, I’m also the vice president of Hofstra’s new YouTube Club which I’ll be working on content for during our one day off in L.A.! The first time I went to L.A. was the summer before my senior year of high school. I went with my dad to tour a couple of colleges and attend Vidcon since I was a very avid youtube creator/fan at the time. It was a life-changing experience and I was convinced that I needed to move out to the west coast. L.A. has been my end goal since that trip and now I am faced with the challenge of figuring out what positions to aim for. In film alone, there are so many departments that I often find it overwhelming to try to pin down an area to focus on. I hope that through this trip I will learn which areas interest me more than others and which positions are the best fit for me. I can’t wait to see what my adventures in L.A. will lead to!
