Outside the New York Bubble

By: Caroline Lea

/ Hello! My name is Caroline and I am a senior video/television major from Richmond, Virginia. Growing up, I loved theater, photography and figure skating, so basically anything artistic and creative. When senior year of high school and college decisions came around, I knew I wanted a major that would challenge me but also had a creative outlet. I was also determined to move to New York for school and was touring schools near the city when I came across Hofstra. When I saw the television studios and learned what I could do with a television major, I knew that television and Hofstra were right for me. Live television combined my love of performances with my passion for cameras and technology.

Now, I can proudly say I have pushed myself to do everything I can with my major and explore all of my career options. I have been given so many opportunities and learned from them all. I have been the production manager for our school show Thursday Nite Live, our version of SNL, for two years while holding numerous internships. I interned for two semesters with Bravo’s digital team, one MSNBC’sMorning Joe, and soon I’ll be joining SYFY and USA networks as their creative marketing production intern.

In my pursuit to explore all of my career options for life after graduation, I knew that seeing the opportunities that Los Angeles has to offer had to be my next big step. I haven’t been to L.A. in about 14 years and the only thing I remember from that trip was a casting agent approaching my parents in a mall and asking if I would want to be an extra in some Disney Channel shows (They said “no.”Thanks, Mom and Dad.) I’m beyond excited to be heading back on a professional trip to learn about the industry and opportunities outside of the New York bubble. I have learned that being aware of what else is going on in the media industry is vital when working in this field and I cannot wait to see what’s happening in L.A.!
